A Theme Song Should Match Your Strut

Holy cow, this is my first post in May? Man I’m being neglectful.

A lot of people have been commenting lately about Hillary Clinton’s decision to let her support base choose her theme song. Digg, for example, is encouraging a write-in of a Nine Inch Nails song . It’s certainly an interesting choice.

Overall, I think giving your supporters the chance to weigh in on your theme song is cool. But I have serious concerns about the Round 1 choices that are making it to Round 2.

All good songs, sure. And the lyrics / song titles are there, but what about the rhythm? This music is the backdrop to Hillary walking out to the podium. It’s gotta be something good… and U2’s “Beautiful Day” doesn’t cut it. There’s no potential for strutting in that song… if she does use that song, the only truism is that it will take her an hour to make it to the podium. Check out this video of Kobe Bryant set to the song - lots of slow motion! Exactly my point. You aren’t going to get a rally crowd fired up with that song, unless they’re all smoking up and, with tears in their eyes, shouting out “Yeah, it really is a beautiful day!!”

I see that Shania Twain’s “Rock This Country!” also made the top 5. A good choice, faster rhythm, but not the right rhythm. Give the song a listen and picture the strut. You can see it being a little cheesy, right? Each trip to the podium will consist of at least a couple intervals of awkward dance moves.

Thankfully her support base has a good sense for this sort of thing. Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” was the top write-in. Perfect! That’s the song that can get people fired up while having a solid beat to walk out to. That’s the song that’s going to get my vote.

Thinking about this process makes me wonder… there are always dissenters on mailing lists, right? I wonder what types of songs they would write in? A ? Or maybe Devil With a Blue Dress On ? I guess the campaign reserves the right to toss out crappy suggestions. Nevertheless, it’s too bad Stephen Colbert didn’t jump on the contest and tell his fan base to all write-in a song… that would have been interesting to see.

I heard Obama’s going to strut out to the very-struttable Kill Bill theme wielding a samurai sword.

Dude, that would rock. There are some very cool sword slashes put to music in that flick. We just need to line up some of the Crazy 88. We could make a Crazy 88 playing card deck!

But then 34 of them would be jealous.
